Covered In His Love

It’s our final day of study in the book of Ruth and I asked, “Is there a phrase or word that sums of what you’ve learned in this study?” One said, “Don’t give up,” and another said, “God’s got a plan.” As we took a few seconds to think about it she said, “There is no such thing as… ‘It just so happens.’”

She is right. If you look at the Ruth’s story and it’s place in God’s story from beginning to end, it confirms my belief there is no such thing as coincidence. It would take more faith to believe all the circumstances and situations in Naomi’s and Ruth’s life were happenstance than to see God’s hand in it all.

See for yourselves.

Famine drives Naomi’s family out of the Promised Land to Ruth’s homeland.
Naomi’s son meets Ruth and marries her.
Ruth follows Naomi home.
She winds up working in the field of an unknown kinsman redeemer.
He notices her. Agrees to marry her. He gets the legal requirements handled.
Marries her. Redeems it all according to the law.
A baby is born who redeems Ruth and Naomi once Boaz is gone.
Their inheritance is secure along with the lineage of King David.
Because that baby born to Ruth will be the grandfather of the man after God’s own heart.

None of this. not one iota. one second. one step was “It just so happens.”

God is a God of purpose. And He crafted a story out of Naomi’s circumstances that points us to the One who some twenty-eight generations later will redeem the whole wide world once and for all.

Friends, God loves us too much to leave the saving up to “It just so happens.” Instead he steps in and covers our sin and mess and faithlessness. He redeems what has been stolen, lost, or given away. His love covers all of that and so much more.
